The Healthy, Green and Into the Outdoors project was completed in the fall of 2016. Its’ original mission was to develop a 22 member obesity prevention coalition, for collective impact, in the Shreveport community.
Several former, HGIO component programs continue today: The MLK Health Center Garden & Learning Center, the Shreveport Green Mobile Market and the One Great River Health Trekker Challenge.
One Great River’s role was to develop HGIO with a grant, from the Community Foundation of North Louisiana, and to coordinate project activities with a funding, from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of Louisiana Obesity Prevention Challenge Grant. One Great River responsibilities included development of an HGIO Youth Corps (Health Trekker), coordination of an educational advocacy campaign with KTBS TV3 (the regional ABC affiliate) and to train parenting workshop leaders.
